MORNING:
THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAIL
Techniques for preparing images that win

Mike McNamee BSc FRPS FBPPA

What makes a winner? A really good idea is a fine start! Beyond that, though, you have to give the judge as few reasons to knock points off as you possibly can. Feed 'em only scraps! Now the devil really is in the detail - colour balance, sharpening, borders, perfect masking - all go towards leaving the judge with nothing to pick on. If the judge likes your print, and cannot find a single fault with it, there is only one outcome - you're a winner!

Mike's day will be truly hands on, you the audience are going to be the judges, the plaintiff and the accused. You are going to have to adjust colour, make sharpening adjustments, have your test prints analysed. Bring your thinking caps (and your reading glasses!), a pen and paper, if you hide at the back Mike will make you sit at his desk at the front!

A calibrated reference print of the test file will be available for visual comparison and a full analysis will be carried out on some of the prints we are expecting you to bring along. For those who wish to have their output analysed, print the file 'Technical Target07FOGRA.jpg' as well as you can and preferably as an A3, put your name in the box on the print and DO NOT WRITE anywhere else. Note that the file is an Adobe RGB profile, click 'Use the embedded profile' when you open it for printing. DOWNLOAD THE TARGET FILE HERE

Topics for the day include:

  • RAW File Adjustments
  • Sharpening
  • Fine Tuning output.
  • Making Borders
  • Printing (an Epson 3880 will be available)
  • Soft prooofing (both Colour and Monochrome output)
  • Methods of assessing and viewing prints

AFTERNOON:
MIKE McNAMEE continues

About our speaker
Mike McNamee has been involved in digital imaging since its early days and has won a number of international and national awards with his photographs which are in demand throughout the world. He has edited a number of magazines including Digital Photographer, Digital Photographer and Creative Imaging and, currently, Professional Imagemaker. He is a highly-regarded lecturer both nationally and overseas.

6 - 24 October RPS DI Group Exhibition: The Art of Photography: from Plate Camera to Computer. Riverhouse Barn Gallery, Manor Road, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, KT12 2PF .
Consumer digital cameras and easy access to imaging software have led to greater awareness of the use of manipulation in everything from airbrushed models on magazine covers to celebrity and political setups. But the debate about truth and illusion in photography is far older. In a rare opportunity to see early prints from The Royal Photographic Society's Collection - ranging from 1845 to 1940 - this exhibition contrasts the work of the pioneers, including staging and multiple negatives to make composite prints, with outstanding work from today's RPS digital photographers who use their cameras and computers to develop exciting images and art. An associated workshop and lecture will explore digital imaging today.
Sunday 17 October
10.00 - 16.00
RPS DI Group: Steve Caplin on Reality and Illusion in association with The Art of Photography: from Plate Camera to Computer (6-24 October) at Riverhouse Barn Gallery, Manor Road, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, KT12 2PF.
Following his successful day for the DI Group last year, Steve Caplin presents a thought provoking and challenging session linked to the exhibition, and a Photoshop workshop. Steve is a specialist in digital imaging and Photoshop special techniques creating satirical montages for the newspapers and an author of several books including How to Cheat at Photoshop and Art and Design in Photoshop. He will cover the ethics of photographic manipulation with current and historical examples with a detailed presentation on imaging techniques for photographers. £25 including lunch. Tickets from Riverhouse Barn 01932 253354 / boxoffice@riverhousebarn.co.uk

MORNING:
MY PHOTOGRAPHIC ART
Brian Beaney FRPS

Brian takes his photography beyond the moment of capture. His images are digitally painted with light, mood and atmosphere to try to communicate the peace, tranquillity and 'buzz' he experienced when taking the shot. Sometimes, he says, the pleasure is just in using his imagination.
In this morning session, Brian will inspire us with a viewing of his stunning images, including those that made up his Fellowship panel, and talk to us about his approach to his very special style of photography.

AFTERNOON:

PLEASE NOTE that the 2011 dates are provisional at this stage, and may be subject to change or cancellation. There is as yet no programme for 2011 (apart from our annual fixtures), as we do not currently have a Programme Secretary (the programme is usually planned 12 months in advance). Any member (not necessarily an RPS or DIG member) who would consider tasking on this role should contact Roger Norton as soon as possible. Attendees will appreciate that, without a Programme Secretary, there can be no 2011 programme, and effectively no Thames Valley Centre.
