Preparing images for submission to the web site

When sending images for posting on our web site galleries, it will help if your submissions follow these guidelines:
  • A dimension of around 1000 pixels on the longest side (we will resample to suit the web page).
  • The PPI (or DPI) setting is not relevant for web images; the default 72ppi is fine but don't worry if it is some other figure.
  • The format should be JPEG, with minimal compression (level 10 or more), as we will have to resample it.
  • The colour space should be sRGB. If it is some other colour space, we will have to convert it for the web.
  • Please ensure that your images include the title, copyright and, optionally a description, in the FileInfo or IPTC/XMP data. This data is automatically picked up to caption and protect your work when the gallery is generated. Remember that any such information stored in XMP files or in, say, your Lightroom catalogue, will need to be written to the file before you resize and send it, otherwise we won't get it. If you want to include the © symbol in the copyright field (as in '© Joe Bloggs'), you can get this by (on a PC) holding down the Alt key and typing 0, 1, 6, 9, in sequence on the numeric keypad at the right hand end of your keyboard. Mac procedure may vary. If you are unsure about writing XMP data, let us have sufficient accompanying information to enable us to do it for you (but you will find it something useful to learn!)
  • Please let us know all your photographic qualifications so that we can credit your work correctly (and also update our records).
  • If you require a set of images to be displayed in a particular order, it will help if your filenames start with "01_...", "02_...", "03_...", etc.
  • Email your images to @rpsdig-thamesvalley.org.uk.
